7.24 At a hydroelectric power plant, the water pressure head is at a height of 300 m and the water flow available is 100 m3s–1. If the turbine generator efficiency is 60%, estimate the electric power available from the plant (g = 9.8 ms–2).

Given,

Height of water pressure head, ā„Ž = 300 m

The volume of water flown in 1 sec, V = 100 m3

Mass of water, m = 100 Ɨ 103 = 105 kg

Efficiency, š‘’ = 60%

The potential energy of water during one second = š‘šš‘šš‘šš‘šā„Ž = 105 Ɨ 9.8 Ɨ 300 =29.4 Ɨ 107 J sāˆ’1

Efficiency,

š‘’ = output power/input power

output power = š‘’š‘’ Ɨ input power = 0.6 Ɨ 294 Ɨ 106 = 176 MW

Hence, 176 MW of power is available from the plant.
