5.7 What role does adsorption play in heterogeneous catalysis?

Step 1:

Heterogenous catalysis:

A catalytic process in which the catalyst and the reactants are present in different phases is known as heterogeneous catalysis. This heterogeneous catalytic action can be explained in terms of the adsorption theory.

Step 2:

Role of adsorption in heterogeneous catalysis-

1. Diffusion of reactants to the surface of the catalyst.
2. Adsorption of reactant is on the surface of the catalyst.
3. The chemical reaction can occur at the catalyst surface by intermediate formation between them.
4. Desorption of the product of the reaction is also at the surface of the catalyst.

(iv) Diffusion of products away from the catalyst surface.
In such reactions, the products have very less affinity for the catalyst and are quickly desorbed, thereby making the surface free for other reactants.
