Sulpha drugs kill bacteria and fungi by interfering with their metabolism.
(a) Sulphapyridine is a sulphonamide antibacterial drug. It is no longer prescribed for the treatment of infections in humans. It is a good antibacterial drug, but its water solubility is very pH-dependent. Thus, there is a risk of crystallization within the bladder or urethra, which could lead to pain or blockage.
(b) Prontosil is also called sulphamidochrysoidine. It is used in the treatment of general bacterial infection in humans.
